CBBC has ordered a children’s sci-fi drama about a robot’s attempts to be a regular teenager.

The 13 x 30-minute series called Eve, marks the first move into children’s drama for production company Leopardrama, which is owned by Argonon.

Eve was created by Tracey Beaker Returns writer Emma Reeves and Leopardrama’s David Chikwe, who worked on BBC series Missing.

It follows the adventures of Eve, a sentient female robot living with a family in suburbia while trying to make sense of human life as a teenager.

CBBC executive producer Sue Nott said: “Eve’s attempts to discover the essence of being human will resonate with every child trying to find their place in the world. With its heady mix of adventure, mystery and sheer fun, Eve is an exciting addition to the CBBC drama slate.”

Eve will be filmed in the summer of 2014. Further announcements, including cast, to follow.

Jessica Brown Findlay will star as Mary Yellan in a new BBC adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel Jamaica Inn, written by Emma Frost.

23 year old Jessica (represented by Troika) made her film debut in the coming-of-age drama Albatross. She played Lady Sybil Crawley in Downton Abbey, went on to star in Labyrinth, and has recently wrapped playing Rachel in Lone Sherfig's Posh. Jessica will next be seen playing the lead of Beverly Penn alongside an all-star cast in Winter's Tale for Warner Bros.

In Jamaica Inn she will star alongside Misfits and The Paradise star Matthew McNulty, who will play her love interest Jem Merlyn. They will be join by young cast member Charles Furness (represented by A&J Management) playing Thomas - newcomer Charles will soon be seen in the BBC's The Whale where he plays the lead role of Tom Nickerson.

Made for the channel by Origin Pictures it will be directed by BAFTA-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe (Call The Midwife, Five Daughters), who said:

"I love Jamaica Inn because it is an exhilarating adventure story set in a wild landscape with brilliant characters, and at its heart is Mary Yellan - a fantastic female heroine.  I am delighted that Jessica Brown Findlay is going to play this bold and opinionated, courageous but naive young woman, whose curiosity and fiery nature get her into big trouble. To have Jessica, along with such talented actors as Sean Harris, Joanne Whalley and Matthew McNulty - it's my dream cast.”

Jamaica Inn synopsis:
Set in 1820 against the forbidding backdrop of windswept Cornish moors, the story follows the journey of young and spirited Mary (Brown Findlay) who is forced to live with her Aunt Patience after the death of her mother. Mary arrives at the isolated Jamaica Inn to discover her Aunt is a shell of the carefree woman she remembers from her childhood, and instead finds a drudge who is firmly under the spell of her domineering husband Joss.
The Inn has no guests - the rooms are locked and kept for storage - but it soon becomes clear that it’s a cover, as Joss is the leader of a smuggling ring, and Jamaica Inn the hub of his ‘free’ trade.
As Mary gets drawn into the dangerous world of smuggling, she finds herself attracted to Jem Merlyn, Joss’s roughly handsome younger brother. But he stands for everything that Mary despises and worse, she fears that he’s involved in Joss’s gang. Mary’s morals and loyalties become deeply conflicted. Who can she trust? Can she even trust herself?
Seeking guidance, Mary visits the parish vicar, Francis Davey, and his sister Hannah. But can they help her to navigate this dangerous new world and do the right thing, or will she lose herself in everybody else’s criminality? When Mary finds herself in peril for her own life, she is tested to the core and she’s forced to find out what she’s really made of.

The cast also includes Sean Harris (The Borgias, Southcliffe) as Joss Merlyn, Ben Daniels (Wiper’s Times, House Of Cards) as Davey, Joanne Whalley (The Borgias, Gossip Girl) as Aunt Patience and Shirley Henderson (Southcliffe, The Crimson Petal And The White) as Hannah.

Emma Frost, writer, said: “I love Daphne du Maurier’s novels and it’s been a lifelong dream to adapt Jamaica Inn. I hope I have done justice to this wonderful tale of morality, survival and desire. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to adapt it for the screen, and I'm tremendously excited to see how our talented cast and director bring the scripts to life.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, commented: “I'm confident that this exciting young cast will bring this classic story to the screen for a whole new generation of audiences.”

The 3x60 minute drama starts filming this week on location in Cornwall, Yorkshire and Cumbria.

First look at Topsy and Tim

$

0
A new series Topsy And Tim which draws on the legacy of the famous childrens books by Jean and Gareth Adamson comes to CBeebies this November.

With a focus on big drama inspired by the small stuff in little people’s lives, each episode will feature a vibrant, charming insight into family life from the point of view of 5-year-old twins, Topsy and Tim. Whether it’s washing the car with Dad; learning to ride a bike with Mum; or finding a lost cat, each story is full of warmth, humour and above all authenticity. Topsy And Tim is a series that all families can recognise a part of themselves in.

8 year old Jocelyn McNab (represented by Alphabet Kidz) from Maidstone plays Topsy Odell. Jocelyn has previousl appeared in Bletchley Circle, The Fear and Southclifffe.
Topsy is more gung-ho than Tim and there’s a real zest about her. She’s usually a real carefree chatterbox, giggly and very fidgety. She is open and trusting and hates confrontation. If she’s ever under pressure then she would always give in.

7 year old Joshua Lester from North London plays Tim Odell. He's appeared in various TV commercials and The Adam And Joe Show.
Tim thinks before he acts (unlike Topsy who is more impulsive). Although he is a thinker, this doesn’t mean he is a serious child in general as he loves to explore, laugh and tumble. Tim’s inclination to think leads to a tendency to turn quiet, even over-react when he’s faced with changes to his everyday life and routine.

Topsy and Tim's friends are played by Natahlia Colbourne as Kerry, their friend and neighbour, Kayleigh Burke as Topsy's friend Vinda, and Tom Hibberd as Tim's friend Tony Welch.

Author Jean Adamson met the young cast and said: "What delightful, charming, friendly and articulate children they both are. I came away feeling confident that they will do an excellent job in bringing my two little characters to life."

Topsy and Tim is a Darrall Macqueen production and is produced by Fiona Robinson.

Kay Benbow, Controller of CBeebies said: "The stories of Topsy And Tim are told and shot from the perspective of the five year old characters as they capture everyday childhood experiences. I hope audiences will enjoy and identify with both dramas.”

There will also be some fantastic content on the CBeebies website to accompany the Topsy And Tim TV series.

Topsy And Tim’s Fun In The House game immerses children into the world of Topsy And Tim. Children can explore the house (inside and out!) and learn about real world experiences through play. The game will give children the chance to explore some of Topsy and Tim’s everyday experiences such as getting ready for bed, brushing their teeth, baking cakes and looking after Wiggles.

Misfits Series 5

The award-winning drama Misfits returns for the fifth and final time at 10pm on Wednesday 23rd October.

The series marks the first anniversary of the storm, and the gang have to up their game if they're going to tackle some real-life, A-grade, superpowered vigilantes.

The final series sees the return of:

Karla Crome as Jess. Having had her heart broken by Alex ‘the handsome barman’ in Series 4, Jess is now more determined than ever that she won’t let her vulnerability show. But despite her cool exterior, an unlikely liaison is on the horizon that takes her completely by surprise.

Joseph Gilgun as Rudy. In the final series of Misfits, Rudy 2 discovers a support group for people with super powers, and once there he is encouraged by fellow attendees to stop taking flak from Rudy 1 and stand on his own two feet. When Rudy 2 confronts his other half about wanting to become his own person, Rudy 1 is predictably furious and dismissive, leading to a falling out between the two Rudys. But when Rudy 2 goes missing, Rudy 1 finds he can’t cope as well on his own as he thought.

Nathan McMullen as Finn. Loveable Liverpudlian Finn tries hard (perhaps a little too hard) to befriend people and please almost everyone, especially Jess whom he has had a crush on since they first met. But when he is captured by a group of Devil-worshipping scouts and the beginning of Series 5, the gang soon realise they will do whatever it takes to save their friend.

Matt Stokoe as Alex. In the opening episode, handsome barman Alex discovers that he has acquired a strange new superpower that he has to use on one of the gang. The ensuing chaos sees Alex doing community service and finally joining the rest of the guys in orange.

Natasha O’Keeffe as Abby. Series 5 sees Abby fall in love with a series of unlikely partners, but Abby has an emptiness at the heart of her. She has no memories of life before the storm – she doesn’t know who she is and no one seems to be looking for her. She’s desperate to discover the truth about what happened to her but when she does, her life becomes more complicated than ever, revealing a history that leads to a terrifying fight for her life.

The first episode of Series 5, written by Howard Overman and directed by William McGregor, is on E4 at 10:00pm on Wednesday 23rd October.

Drifters

Drifters is a brand new six-part comedy series coming to E4 this autumn, about three best friends living in Leeds who’ve graduated, had a year out and are struggling to find a job that doesn't suck, a place to live that is half decent and a boyfriend they actually like.

Initially billed as a female Inbetweeners, the show explores the very funny, very humiliating experiences of Meg, her eccentric cousin Bunny and their friend Laura, as they discover that life might just be a bit tougher than they had imagined…
From demeaning Promotions jobs complete with mad outfits (well, have you ever dressed as a mobile phone to pay the rent?) to pursuing the men of their dreams - yet dating the men of their nightmares - the girls face #FML-worthy disasters in both their work and personal lives.

Comedy writer and actress Jessica Knappett (represented by United Agents) stars in the lead role as Meg in her first self-penned comedy, Drifters. Her most recent roles have been on the big screen as Neil’s love-interest Lisa in The Inbetweeners Movie and in the Alan Partridge Movie: Alpha Papa. Jessica was a founder member of acclaimed sketch group Lady Garden.

Lauren O'Rourke (represented by United Agents) plays Meg's best friend Laura.
Birmingham born stand-up comedian Lauren’s most recent role was Nicole in The Inbetweeners Movie.

Lydia Rose Bewley (represented by Independent Talent) from Leicestershire plays Meg's eccentric cousin Bunny. Lydia also appeared in The Inbetweeners Movie in the role of Jane. She also appeared in the 2013 comedy Plebs, ITV2. Lydia's older brother Charlie Bewley is best known for his role as the vampire Demetri in The Twilight Saga films. Lydia graduated from the Oxford School of Drama in 2007.

Bob Mortimer and Arabella Weir star as Meg’s parents and Nick Mohammed is the girls’ insufferable jobs-worth boss Malcolm.

The series is directed by Simon Delaney and produced by Bwark Productions, a Zodiak Media Company, the company behind E4's multi-award winning series and film, The Inbetweeners

In The Flesh Series 2 starts filming

Filming has begun on the second series of the award-nominated BBC Three zombie drama, In The Flesh.

Critically acclaimed creator Dominic Mitchell reignites the world of teenager Kieren Walker, a PDS (Partially Deceased Syndrome) sufferer who continues in his struggle to find acceptance.

Luke Newberry returns in the lead role of Kieren, together with Emily Bevan as his upbeat friend and fellow medicated zombie Amy Dyer), and Harriet Cains as his feisty sister, Jem Walker.

Over six-episodes, Series Two propels us back to the cauldron of Roarton where the living and the undead have reached a fragile peace, with Kieren desperately keeping his head down, squirrelling money into his ‘escape fund’. But in the wider world, fear is in the air. The radical Pro-Living Party, Victus, is gaining government seats with a resulting spate of PDS Terrorism linked to the Undead Liberation Army. With the arrival in the village of new and explosive characters from both Victus and the ULA, Kieren’s plans are thrown into disarray as both set their sights on him and he finds himself caught in the emotional crossfire. A quiet life is not an option.

Director Jim O’Hanlon said: "With its uniquely naturalistic take on the zombie genre, told as much from the point of view of the zombies (or PDS Sufferers) themselves, as that of the locals forced to live alongside them, In The Flesh is original, dramatic, funny, politically engaged and never less than 100% emotionally truthful.
It's rare to find a series that is so exciting, entertaining and humorous, and yet has so much to say about the world we live in today. The characters have genuine verve, wit, colour and depth and I can't wait to get started on bringing them to life."

Writer and In The Flesh creator, Dominic Mitchell: "Returning to Roarton village has been a real joy, revisiting old characters and inventing new ones, entangling their lives and their loves. My hope is that In The Flesh series two will have something for everyone: with high-octane genre thrills running alongside emotional, hard-hitting domestic drama, with plenty of black humour to boot."

Luke Newberry says: "I'm very excited to continue on Kieren’s journey, and am delighted In The Flesh will be returning for a second series. New characters arrive in Roarton, introducing him to further challenges and new dilemmas, as he begins to feel trapped between the living and the dead."

Set in the fictional village of Roarton, In The Flesh started filming on Monday 7th October around the North West of England. The series will air in 2014 on BBC Three.

The drama was first developed by the BBC Drama Production team in Salford and writer Dominic Mitchell was discovered through ‘Northern Voices’, a BBC Writersroom competition.

11 year old Reece Buttery (represented by A&J Management) is set to star as Ben in the new 60-minute adaptation of David Walliams best-selling children's novel Gangsta Granny. He plays schoolboy Ben opposite Julia McKenzie as his titular grandma, alongwith Joanna Lumley, Rob Brydon, Miranda Hart and David Walliams himself.

Reece from London, who is about to turn 12,  plays the series regular role of Mo in CBBC's The Dumping Ground and attends Young and Talented theatre school.

12 year old India Ria Amarteifio (represented by Sylvia Young Agency) from Twickenham, fresh from playing Violet Beauregard in the West End theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, plays Ben's dancing partner Florence with whom Ben has to dance in a local ballroom competition. Until one day, when Ben’s grandma tells him a story that she was once an international jewel thief, and together they go on a wild adventure to complete the one heist she never quite managed in her criminal heyday – which brings them face-to-face with Her Majesty The Queen, played by Joanna Lumley

Rob Brydon  plays Mr Parker – a nosy neighbour who could scupper Ben and his grandma’s plot.

David Walliams says: “I am thrilled that we have such a stellar cast of comedy legends for Gangsta Granny. I can only apologise that I am in it too!”

Gangsta Granny will be directed by Matt Lipsey and begins filming on Sunday, for broadcast this Christmas on BBC One, following on from the success of last Christmas's Mr Stink.

Maisie Williams stars in The Falling

16 year old Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams leads the cast in The Falling, a new feature film from writer/director Carol Morley which starts shooting this week.

The Falling tells the story of Lydia, the troubled girl at the centre of a mysterious fainting epidemic, who is determined to discover the cause of the malady spreading through her British all-girl school in 1969, a year when the whole world seems poised on the brink of change.

Maisie plays the intense Lydia with newcomer Florence Pugh as her best friend, the beautiful, rebellious Abbie.

Their all-girls school is ruled over by the enigmatic headmistress Miss Alvaro (Monica Dolan) with her deputy, the overly strict Miss Mantel (Greta Scacchi).

It's 1969, and the girls, like the world around them, are in a state of change. Abbie is embracing her sexuality, even sleeping with Lydia's beatnik brother. Lydia, neglected by her agoraphobic mother Eileen (Maxine Peake), has made Abbie her emotional focus. After a shocking tragedy, Lydia, finds herself at the center of an outbreak of a mysterious fainting condition. Before long, the phenomenon spreads throughout the school community and when Lydia’s own symptoms worsen, she rallies against the school’s authorities to find and remove the underlying cause before it’s too late.

Following her films BAFTA-nominated The Alcohol Years, Edge, and the critically acclaimed Dreams of a Life, writer/director Carol Morley presents her skewed and dream-like coming of age story with director of photography Agnès Godard. The Falling is presented by BBC Films and BFI in association with Lipsync Productions, a Cannon and Morley/Independent production in association with Boudica Red, a Carol Morley film. The film was developed with the BFI Film Fund.

The Falling is set for release in 2014.

Daniel Radcliffe to play Sebastian Coe

Daniel Radcliffe has been confirmed to star as Sebastian Coe in Gold, a new feature which will tell the story of the Olympic gold medallist's rivalry with fellow athlete Steve Ovett in the years leading up to the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

The film is based on the book The Perfect Distance by Pat Butcher, with a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and Will Davies, and will reunite Radcliffe with Woman In Black director James Watkins.

It is not yet known who will play Ovett in the production.

Writer Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, told the BBC earlier this year the film was "a brilliant story" with a "perfect end".
"I hadn't realised how good it was until you dig into their past," he said. "They were fantastically different athletes and different people. And they rarely met... apart from on the track - but not very often, even on the track."

BBC Films and the British Film Institute have developed the project with AL Films. BBC Films’ head Christine Langan will executive produce, with distribution by Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar’s Embankment Films.

Haslam said: “Gold is a movie about an insatiable need to win, fuelled by intense ambition, only possible through the support of loving family.”

Harry Potter star Daniel can currently be seen starring as Beat writer Allen Ginsburg in Kill Your Darlings, with supernatural thriller Horns awaiting release.

Development is underway for Gold to shoot in the UK and Russia in April next year

With Mick and Linda Carter (played by Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright) on their way to take over The Queen Vic this Christmas, they will be joined by two of their three children, Nancy and Johnny.

Mummy’s boy Johnny is the baby of the family. The first Carter to go to uni, he’s a gentle boy who’s happy to let the rest of his family be the centre of attention. But Johnny has a secret that is going to place him right at the centre of a family storm.
19 year old Sam Strike (represented by Lee Morgan Management) from Essex will be playing Johnny. Sam has previously appeared in CBBC's M.I.High. Speaking of joining EastEnders, Sam said "I'm really excited to be joining EastEnders and the Carter family. They're all really strong characters and I can't wait to see what EastEnders has planned for us all. I've grown up watching Danny and Kellie, both of whom are lovely, so to be playing their son is kind of surreal."

Maddy Hill (represented by Roxane Vacca Management) will play 21 year old tomboy Nancy. The last at the bar and first into a fight, Nancy is stubborn and fiery; her dad loves it, but she's a disappointment to her mum. Underneath, she’s an extremely caring and loyal friend who will always champion the underdog - but that generally gets her into trouble. And she brings a whole lot of trouble with her when she’s dragged kicking and screaming into Albert Square.
Rose Bruford graduate Maddy has previously appeared in Whitechapel, as well as theatre productions The Meeting Place and As You Like It. On joining EastEnders, Maddy adds “I feel incredibly privileged to have been given such an amazing opportunity and I can't wait to start work with such a talented cohort of actors."
