Fresh Meat Series 3 casting news

The third series of Fresh Meat, Channel 4's award-winning comedy drama series, written and created by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, is currently filming in Manchester.

Joining the cast as a brand new housemate and genuine fresher is Faye Marsay as Candice. Home schooled and as yet unsullied by student-dom (unless JP has his way) this first year is about to make an impact on the rest of the house, as they set out to show her just how cool they really are.

26 year old Middlesbrough-born Faye (represented by Curtis Brown) is a recent graduate of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She can currently be seen playing Anne Neville in the BBC's historical drama The White Queen and has also recently joined the cast of ITV's wartime drama, The Bletchley Circle.

Series 3 will see all the main characters returning to Manchester for their second year at university. Well, nearly all of them - having been kicked off her course, Josie (Kimberley Nixon) will be in Southampton, but still talking to her former house mates, slightly disembodied but in full HD via the technological wonders of an iPad. However there are hints she might return to Manchester.

The new series begins with JP (Jack Whitehall) throwing himself, head first, into a second year ceremonial mission to fuck a fresher; accompanied somewhat willingly but not altogether skilfully by his faithful wing-man, Howard (Greg McHugh). Meanwhile Kingsley (Joe Thomas) is still experiencing life as an unlikely lothario as he continues to juggle double women trouble.

There's also another newbie in the mix, as Vod (Zawe Ashton) brings back more than everyone bargained for from her travels in the shape of her new Mexican 'beefcake lover' Javier (which may explain why she and translator Oregon (Charlotte Ritchie) returned from their jaunt separately)

Filming began in Manchester in June and the series will be broadcast on Channel 4 in Autumn 2013.

Young cast announced for New Worlds

Channel 4 has announced the cast set to star as young idealists in a major new four-part historical drama New Worlds.

Set in the turbulent 1680s, the drama takes place on both sides of the Atlantic, as two young men and two young women commit their lives to a fairer future with blood, passion and urgency. New Worlds is described as a gripping story of love and loss and the human price paid for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Scottish Skins actress Freya Mavor plays Beth, the daughter of Angelica, the Countess of Abingdon (played by Eve Best), sheltering at Fanshawe House from a country yet again on the brink of chaos under the tyrannical rule of Charles II. Freya (represented by Hamilton Hodell) can currently be seen in BBC historical drama The White Queen and stars in two Scotland-based films, Not Another Happy Ending and Dexter Fletcher's Sunshine on Leith.

Northern Irish actor 31 year old Jamie Dornan, recently seen starring in The Fall, plays Abe, an outlaw and idealist, who breaks into Beth's sheltered world and jolts her into consciousness, asking if she can standby as the liberties won with her father’s Civil War blood are destroyed?

Meanwhile across the Atlantic in New England the colonists struggle to throw off the distant but steely control of the English Crown, and two young idealists Hope and Ned  find themselves on the brutal frontline.

Hope is played by New Zealander Alice Englert (represented by Hamilton Hodell), the daughter of Jane Campion, who starred as Rosa in Sally Potter's Ginger and Rosa, as well as supernatural love story Beautiful Creatures.

Her fellow colonist Ned, is played by Joe Dempsie. Joe (represented by Troika) played Chris in the original cast of Skins, and currently plays Gendry in HBO's Game of Thrones, he can next be seen in upcoming Channel 4 drama Southcliffe.

Written and created by Peter Flannery (Our Friends In The North) and Martine Brant and produced by Company Pictures (Skins, Shameless, Elizabeth 1, The White Queen) for Channel 4, New Worlds follows on from their 2008 BAFTA-nominated series The Devil’s Whore.

Channel 4 Head of Drama, Piers Wenger says: “New Worlds is a compelling four part drama capturing the political struggles of the period following the English Civil War both at home and overseas. The combination of Peter and Martine’s scripts and Charles Martin’s direction has attracted a diverse and glittering cast and we’re greatly looking forward to seeing their work brought to the screen”

Filming will start in the UK this month with directorCharles Martin (Skins, Run) at the helm.

Transmission of the four one-hour episodes will be on Channel 4 in 2014.

Young Brit lands lead in The Secret Service

RADA graduate Taron Egerton (represented by United Agents) is set to star alongside Colin Firth and Michael Caine in Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn's new film The Secret Service. The 20th Century Fox film is an adaptation of the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons graphic novel of the same name.

Taron, orginally from Aberystwyth in Wales, graduated from RADA last year and went straight into playing Daniel in The Last of the Haussmans at the National Theatre followed by a role in Polly Stenham's No Quarter at the Royal Court. He will next be seen in new Sky1 drama The Smoke but The Secret Service will be his feature film debut.

He will play a street kid whose uncle (Colin Firth) teaches him how to be a secret agent. Millar has described The Secret Service as "My Fair Lady meets James Bond."

Variety previously reported that Vaughn met with young British actors that included Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, who recently landed the staring role in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, and Attack the Block star John Boyega. But the director decided to open the search up even further, which led to him coming across Egerton.

The search is now on to cast the female love-interest with potentials reported to include Emma Watson and Dark Shadows actress Bella Heathcote.

The Secret Service is due to start shooting this autumn with a potential release date of November 2014.

The Inbetweeners Movie 2 confirmed

The creative team behind 2011’s smash hit The Inbetweeners Movie today confirmed that a second movie is in production and will be released in cinemas across the UK & Ireland early August 2014.

The follow-up to the UK’s most successful comedy film of all time will be shot later this year, reuniting the hapless Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas) for a new big-screen adventure.

Creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley commented, "We couldn't be more excited to be making another Inbetweeners movie with Simon, Joe, James and Blake. Frankly it's pathetic how much we've all missed each other. A new chapter in the lives of the Inbetweeners feels like the very least we can do to thank the fans for their phenomenal response to the first movie."

Rumours have previously circulated that the sequel would be based around a wedding. The first film smashed UK box office records on its opening weekend in 2011 and went on to become one of the biggest-selling comedy DVDs of all time.

Film4 and Channel 4 will co-finance and produce the new film through Bwark Productions.

Agency books open for 16 - 21 year olds

First look at The Book Thief

An international open casting call was held last year to find the young girl to star in 20th Century Fox's The Book Thief, the Michael Petroni-scripted adaptation of the best-selling Marcus Zusak novel.

It was announced back in February that 12 year old French-Canadian youngster Sophie Nélisse landed the role and with filming now complete, the film is scheduled for release in November.

Director Brian Percival described the casting search to USA Today. He  knew it was crucial to find the right actress to play Liesel Meminger, but after seeing "thousands" of actresses from around the globe, Percival was stuck as he prepared for the film.

"Some were good in different ways but nobody was actually Liesel," he says. "And it was key that we found someone who didn't have to act it so much as just be Liesel."

When he received the audition tape of 12-year-old French Canadian actress Sophie Nélisse, Percival knew he had found the perfect person to play the vibrant girl mired in Nazi Germany.

"It was quite uncanny, this kid. I was taken right away," says Percival. "It was this mixture of naive innocence but at the same time she's actually quite ballsy. You feel that you can get kneed in the groin at any point."

Sophie stars alongside Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson, who play the two play German foster parents who care for Liesel before hiding a young Jewish man (Ben Schnetzer) in their working-class home. Liesel discovers the joy of reading to such an extent that she resorts to stealing ever-scarce books.

"It's a big ask to have someone that age carry such a key role. If Sophie didn't get it right, everyone else would have struggled around her, fortunately, she just nailed it." said Percival.

Even though she starred in 2011's Monsieur Lazhar, Oscar-nominated for best foreign film, Nélisse described accepting the Book Thief role as daunting.

"There were so many big actors (already cast) I thought they'd say, 'Oh, she's not very good.' " said Nélisse, who turned 13 during filming. "But after the first week they found that I was not that bad!"

12 year old German actor Nico Liersch plays Rudi Steiner,  Liesel's best friend described as having a heart of gold and a lust for life.

Ben Schnetzer, and American actor trained at Guildhall drama school in London, stars as the refugee Max who Liesl befriends.

The Book Thief is due for release this November.

Skins star lands lead role in Honeytrap

Skins star Jessica Sula has been cast in the lead role of Layla in Honeytrap, the debut feature film from Rebecca Johnson (writer/director of award-winning short film Top Girl and Screen International ‘Star of Tomorrow’ 2009) – a co-production by Bright Pictures and Fierce Productions.

19 year old Jessica (represented by Waring and McKenna) is best known for her role as Grace Blood in the multiple-award winning E4 series Skins, beating 8,000 other actors to win the role, and recently appeared in ITV's Love and Marriage. Honeytrap is her debut film role.

Producer Sarah Sulick said: “Our casting director did an exhaustive search and we saw many talented actresses, but Jessica really stood out. The fact that she is of Trinidadian descent – like our main character – adds another layer of authenticity to a story that is very much rooted in a specific place and time: contemporary South London.

Writer and director Rebecca Johnson said: “The urban genre has not been explored from the female perspective before and it’s time this side of the story was told. Jessica is a rare talent who will bring Layla to searing life. I’m very excited to have found her.”

Honeytrap tells the story of fifteen-year-old Layla, who sets up the boy who’s in love with her to be killed. The story is based on true events, inspired by several cases that have taken place in South London in recent years.

When eighteen-year-old rapper Troy picks Layla out of the crowd, she is swept into a romance that brings popularity, status and sexual awakening - until Troy discards her and she loses everything. Determined to win him back, Layla vows to rebuild herself in Troy’s image, becoming a heartless, hardened player. But, despite her boasts that she is just using him, she also finds her first true friend in sixteen-year-old Shaun. As the forces she has set in motion start to collide, Layla must choose: between the two boys, between desire and friendship, between power and connection to another human being.

As part of the production, and in line with Rebecca’s work under Fierce Productions, 15-20 young people from Brixton will join the production team and shadow the crew. The Training and Mentoring scheme has been funded by The Walcot Foundation and the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation.

Principal photography on Honeytrap will begin on location in Brixton, London on Monday 2nd September for four weeks.

12 year old Ryan Wilkinson plays Charlie, with Olivia Cosgrove and Sam Hattersley as his best friends Alison and Ben. Milly Zero plays Charlie’s older sister Hannah, and Adam Greaves-Neal is his little brother Louie.

The colourful 13x30 minute series (previously known as Family By Sea and Charlie and the Alien) is centred around an imaginative 10-year-old boy named Charlie, whose family have recently moved from London to run a bed and breakfast by the sea in Scarborough.

Escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life, Charlie - who lives in the B&B with his mum and dad, 14-year-old sister Hannah and little brother Louie who is seven - loves his new-found freedom and exploring the town that has become their new seaside home.

Alongside his best friends Ben and Alison, Charlie roams the beaches, arcades and fish and chip shops of Scarborough, coming up with a variety of mischievous schemes and plans along the way. He also occasionally encounters his mum and dad’s B&B guests who are often friendly to Charlie... but sometimes regret that later!

Connal Orton, All At Sea’s executive producer, says: “All at Sea is a funny, fast-paced comedy set on the beautiful Scarborough coastline and we’re loving being on location there. It’s a really colourful series and we hope that CBBC viewers will enjoy seeing what scrapes Charlie and his friends get into.”

All At Sea also stars Nicola Stephenson as Charlie's mum Helen, and Steve Edge as his dad Kevin.

The series will start on CBBC this autumn.

Henry Lloyd-Hughes is set to star alongside Mia Wasikowska in a new  film adaptation of the Gustave Flaubert novel Madame Bovary.

28 year old Henry (represented in the UK by Curtis Brown) will play Charles Bovary, the provincial doctor husband of Emma (Mia Wasikowska) who endeavors to love her despite her revolt against the ordinariness of her life.

Wolfblood returns to CBBC for series 2

Fantasy action drama Wolfblood returns to CBBC on September 9th for a fast-paced second series, following the lives of teenagers Maddy and Rhydian and their secret lives as wolfbloods.

Wolfbloods like Maddy and Rhydian have razor sharp senses with an amazing sense of smell and are incredibly fast and super strong. They also change into wolves every full moon…

The 13x30-minute series follows the two seemingly ordinary teenagers who are secretly part of the mysterious wolfblood race who have lived amongst us for centuries, disguising their abilities and blending in. Fans have an extra treat this time too as, in addition to the 13 episodes on CBBC, there will also be an exclusive‘secret’ 14th episode which will be shown on the CBBC Red Button and on the CBBC website, plus a brand new Wolfblood game which will also be on the CBBC website.

The intense trials and tribulations of school, friendships, heartbreak and mystery continue in this second series, as Rhydian unexpectedly returns to Stoneybridge putting Maddy and her family in danger.

Spencer Campbell, Wolfblood’s executive producer, said: “We had a great reaction to the first series and are looking forward to introducing some exciting new characters this time round. Series two is packed full of surprises. Maddy and Rhydian are still learning about who they are, whilst trying to avoid discovery, and I think they have grown up a lot. It may be complicated being a teenager, but it's even more difficult when you’re a wolfblood teenager!”

Wolfblood stars Bobby Lockwood (Rhydian), Aimee Kelly (Maddy), Louisa Connolly-Burnham (Shannon) and Kedar Williams-Stirling (Tom) and was filmed entirely on location in Northumberland.

Wolfblood was created by Debbie Moon and is a co-production between CBBC and ZDF/ZDFE.

Q&A with Bobby Lockwood (Rhydian)

What’s it like being back filming series 2?
Great! I really missed all the guys and this series is amazing.

Were you surprised by the success of series one?
A bit. I think we were all aware of the potential of the show but it’s great to see that people seemed to love it.

For anyone who hasn’t seen Wolfblood, can you give a bit of background to bring them up to speed?
It is set in Stonybridge, a little village that has a Wolfblood family (humans who can transform into wolves). The show is about how the Wolfbloods try to live normal lives and keep their secret.

What can viewers expect from the second series?
A lot more drama - and a lot more wolves!

Has Rhydian changed much in this series?
A lot has happened to him and I think he has grown up. The wild wasn’t exactly good to him but it taught him a lot.

Are you still enjoying playing Rhydian? Is it a challenge?
I love playing him. He is quite a complex character especially for a kid’s show, so can be quite tough at times but is always great fun.

What’s his relationship with Maddy like in this series?
They are still very close but you’ll have to tune in to see how they get on in this series!

Are there any new characters you can tell us about?
You’ll be introduced to some of the wild pack. They’re a crazy bunch!

What’s it like playing a Wolfblood? How do you get in the right frame of mind?
There are quite a lot of growls and frowns before action to get you thinking…

What’s the best thing about being in Wolfblood?
Definitely the cast and crew. It’s a really close group of hard working people who all want to make a great show.

If you were a Wolfblood in real life, what would be the first thing you would do?
Probably scare my older brother!

Q&A with Aimee Kelly (Maddy)

What can we expect from the new series of Wolfblood?
Lots of new storylines and new, exciting characters…

Did you think the first series would be as popular as it was?
We didn’t know it was going to be as big as it was - I guess we just tried our best. We’re really pleased that people liked it.

For those who haven’t seen the show, can you tell us a bit about your character Maddy?
She’s adventurous, brave and the leader, but she is also always pulled back by the need to do the right thing.

Has she changed much since the start of the first series?
Yes, a lot! The situations she’s been put in have made her grow up. She has matured a lot in this series.

Where do you film the series?
In and around a place called Rowlands Gill near Newcastle upon Tyne.

What’s a typical day like on set?
Fast-paced, fun, and a good atmosphere. Oh, and sometimes cold!

How do you get on with Bobby, who plays Rhydian?
We’re best friends. He always says he was hired to keep me in line!

Is it difficult to act when special effects are added in post production? Do you need a good imagination to picture the wolves in the shot?
It was odd at first but you learn to see the tennis ball - they use a tennis ball for us to focus on, representing where the wolf would be – as a character.

Can you share any secret snippets from series two to tempt us into watching?
I think the main thing is that Maddy and Rydian have a lot of obstacles to face… a LOT!

Wizards Vs Aliens returns this autumn

CBBC’s Wizards Vs Aliens returns for a second action-packed series this autumn in an extended 14-episode run.

The magical sci-fi series, which was created by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who), stars Scott Haran (represented by Robert Kelly Associates) as 16-year-old wizard Tom Clarke and Percelle Ascott (represented by Sainou) as his scientific friend Benny  who attempt to stop the Nekross from creating big trouble for all of wizardkind.

A fast-paced adventure full of danger, fun and friendship, the second series of Wizards Vs Aliens follows Tom and Benny’s journey as they meet new Aliens, new Wizards, and face their greatest challenges so far. With the Nekross threatening their most powerful attacks yet, it’s more important than ever that Tom and Benny work together to ensure the survival of both wizardkind and the Earth.

Russell T Davies, creator and executive producer of the show, said: “It's a delight to be back on CBBC with a series which is wilder, bolder, deeper and funnier than ever, taking us from suburbia to the wilds of Tibet, encountering spaceships, magical worlds, haunted castles and galactic wars along the way. And at the centre of it all is the most important thing of all - the friendship between two boys, as junior wizard Tom and his best friend Benny fight to save the world. Magic and science are a combustible mix - and this year it's going to explode!”

The series also features Annette Badland (Doctor Who, The Sparticle Mystery) Michael Higgs (EastEnders), Jefferson Hall (Vikings, Emma,), Gwendoline Christie (Game Of Thrones), Dan Starkey (Doctor Who), Tom Bell, and the voice of Brian Blessed as the alien Nekross King.

Produced by BBC Cymru Wales in association with FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment, the 14x30-minute series will air on CBBC later this autumn. It was filmed at the BBC’s Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff and on location around the area.

Newcomer Nick James (represented by D&B Management) will star as 12 year old Henry ‘Hank’ Zipzer, in Hank Zipzer, a brand new comedy drama series coming to CBBC inspired by the book series Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever, written by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver.

Multi-award winning actor Henry ‘The Fonz’ Winkler will also feature in the series.

Fast-paced and funny, the series will follow 12-year-old Henry ‘Hank’ Zipzer, a smart and resourceful boy with a unique perspective on the world. Hank has dyslexia, and when problems arise, he deals with them in a way no-one else would – putting him on a direct collision course with his teachers and parents, who don’t seem to appreciate his latest scheme as much as he thought they would... But, Hank always remains positive and convinced that the next big plan will deliver – after all, tomorrow is another day!

Madeline Holliday (represented by Mark Jermin Management, and a student at The Theatre Workshop in Brighton) will play his highly-intelligent younger sister Emily Zipzer.

Executive producer Sue Nott said: “The stories are inspired by the true life experiences of Henry Winkler and how he felt growing up with dyslexia. At CBBC, we try to reflect the lives of children back at them and Hank Zipzer shows that achievement comes in all shapes and sizes – and it’s set to be very funny too!”
