Florence Pugh, who starred alongside Maisie Williams in The Falling, has landed the lead role in Lady Macbeth, a 19th Century period drama telling a tale of forbidden passion and murder. Lady Macbeth is the first feature to go into production from last years iFeatures initiative.

19 year old Florence, (represented by Tavistock Wood), plays Katherine, a young woman brought up in the wilds of Northumberland, who finds herself childless and friendless, stifled by her marriage of convenience to a rich local industrialist twice her age. Tired of the vast house she shares with her detached husband and father-in-law, Katherine’s interests become piqued by Sebastian, a worker on her husband’s estate.

Florence made her screen debut in The Falling, she was spotted after the casting directors came to her boarding school in Oxford. She is the sister of Game of Thrones actor Toby Sebastian.

26 year old singer-songwriter Cosmo Jarvis (represented by The Artists Partnership) plays Katherine’s paramour, Sebastian. Cosmo recently appeared in Spooks: The Greater Good. As Sebastian, he unlocks a fearsome passion in Katherine. As their illicit affair begins to sour, Katherine’s primal nature emerges with such force that Sebastian’s elation is soon tempered, realising that she will stop at nothing to keep hold of him.

Written by up-and-coming playwright Alice Birch (winner of the 2014 George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright), Lady Macbeth is directed by award-winning shorts director William Oldroyd.

Production has started on Lady Macbeth on location in County Durham, and the four-week shoot will wrap on 17th October, with release slated for 2016.

The A Word

Six year old newcomer Max Vento from West Yorkshire stars in a new BBC drama series The A Word which has just started filming in the Lake District.

Max (represented by WYSPA) plays the youngest son of the Hughes family, whose diagnosis of autism affects the whole family. He stars alongside Lee Ingleby and Morven Christie as his parents, and Christopher Eccleston, Greg McHugh and Vinette Robinson.

Fellow newcomer 19 year old Molly Wright (represented by WGM Talent) from Manchester plays his teenage sister.

The family realises that if their son is ever going to communicate, they are going to have to learn how to communicate themselves. It’s a funny and thought-provoking series about parenthood and childhood, written by BAFTA-winning writer Peter Bowker, who said of the project:

“We have the opportunity here to make something funny, tough, realistic and inventive about contemporary family life and autism. In a society where imperfection increasingly comes with blame attached, it seems timely to look at how autism is regarded both within a family and the wider community – and to give some insight into how that experience might be for the child on the autism spectrum. It’s a drama full of ideas – about parenthood, about disability, about communication, about community – and will emphatically engage an audience whatever their experience of the subject.”

Polly Hill, BBC Controller of Drama, said: "The A Word tackles parts of life that aren't always easy and Peter has drawn on the absolute highs, lows and challenges so many families face when a child is different to other children, in a beautiful way. With Peter’s award-winning track record and history of drama tackling tough subjects, The A Word is set to be a rollercoaster of a series which is ultimately an uplifting, honest and human drama for BBC One.”

The series is based on a Keshet International and July August Productions’ series and drama format which was written and created by Keren Margalit, who will be an executive producer on the UK series.

Filming on the six-part drama will continue in the Lake District and also at Manchester’s Space Project until early 2016 and is expected to air in late Spring 2016.

Northern Lights introduces Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Lyra's search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. In The Subtle Knife she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. The Little Mermaid casting news

18 year old Chloe Moretz is set to play the title role in the new live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

The film will be based on the original Hans Christian Andersen story of a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.

Earlier this year, director Sofia Coppola left the project after creative differences with the studios. According to Variety, Moretz had been the frontrunner for the role even while Coppola was still attached. Some insiders have suggested that Coppola wanted to cast a lesser-known actress in the role rather than a star like Moretz and this was one of the reasons for her parting ways with the project.

Following Coppola’s exit, the studio still wanted Moretz for the role but did not want to make it official until a writer was attached to pen the final pass at the script.

British screenwriter Richard Curtis,  will now be writing the script for Working Title and Universal, but a new director has not yet been announced.

Filming dates have yet to be announced but Chloe took to her Instagram and Twitter account to confirm the news. She wrote: "Here it is !! I've been waiting months to tell everyone how excited I am to take on this beautiful journey with Working Title, Universal, and a beautiful script by Richard Curtis..#TheLittleMermaid !!!! Here we go!!!"

First look at Jamillah and Aladdin

$

You may remember a casting call on Screenterrier back in September last year to find two young newcomers for the leading roles of in Jamillah and Aladdin, a magical new drama series for CBBC .

Here's a first look at the young stars Blossom Campbell (represented by Brown & Mills) as Jamillah, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte (represented by Top Talent) as Aladdin, alongside the Genie played by Leroy Osei-Bonsu.

Launching initially on CBBC, the drama, which filmed on location in South Africa, will be shown across both CBBC and CBeebies, and will transport viewers of all ages to an ancient world full of intrigue and mysterious encounters.

Jamillah, a modern-day girl, lives with her family in London. She is curious and brave and is always on the look-out for adventure. Her story begins when she discovers a dusty old lamp in her attic makes a wish and is startled by the appearance of a charismatic and fun-loving Genie. Genie transports Jamillah back in time to ancient Baghdad where she meets Aladdin.

Aladdin hates household chores (he has a lot of them) and, like Jamillah, dreams of having adventures. He has never met a girl like her before and is amazed, and occasionally horrified, by her actions. She is courageous and bold but he often has to use his charm and quick wit to extricate them both from difficult situations. And, of course they can call on Genie when things get really bad. Sadly, his magic skills are a little rusty so he tends to create as many problems as he tries to solve!

Their adventures lead them through winding back streets of Baghdad, where they encounter snake charmers in shady courtyards, mysterious travellers in the bustling bazaar and even get to meet the princess in the sun-filled palace gardens. Lurking in shadowed alleyways are one or two baddies, but together with Genie they are a match for any trickster.

In the double opening episode Jamillah arrives in Baghdad for the first time, squashing Aladdin’s eggs in the process. In the confusion, Jamillah knocks the fruit from Mustafa (played by Joe Vaz) the market trader's stall. Mustafa demands either money or more fruit, but Aladdin has neither and is sent to jail. Jamillah and Genie must hatch a plan to try and get him out.

Jamillah and Aladdin will start on Sunday 29th November on CBBC, time to be confirmed.

First look at Peter and Wendy

Back in January Screenterrier posted a casting call for the new ITV drama based on the story of Peter Pan. In May the news of the two young actors who landed the title roles was announced.

Peter and Wendy is currently scheduled to air on Saturday 26th December on ITV and here's a first look at the two young stars.

13 year old Hazel Doupe from Ireland, plays the joint roles of twelve year old Lucy Rose, a patient at modern day Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Wendy Darling, in her re-imagining of Peter Pan story. Hazel (represented by Macfarlane Chard), who attends Billie Barry Stage School in Dublin, played Sarah in the RTE docu/drama Titanic, Blood and Steel, and starred in Irish thriller Jack Taylor:Shot Down.
Zac Sutcliffe (who attends Yorkshire School of Acting) from Bradford, stars as Peter. Zac's previous filmed Grimsby, a new film from Sacha Baron Cohen.

The drama is a re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s much loved classic novel, which reinterprets the timeless story for the modern age while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original.

The story opens in modern day Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) where twelve-year-old Lucy Rose is awaiting treatment for a serious heart condition. Her mother Julie (Laura Fraser, also doubling up as Mrs Darling) is distraught with the fear of losing her child, and surgeon Mr Wylie (Stanley Tucci, who also plays Hook) assures her he’ll do everything in his power to make the operation a success. The day before her operation, Lucy reads J.M. Barrie’s novel of Peter Pan to a crowd of sick children in the hospital, and she goes to sleep with thoughts of the classic tale in her head. Lucy dreams this version of Peter Pan into existence and the story is retold through the young girl’s imagination.

The magical story cuts back and forth between Lucy’s modern day struggles and the fantasy land of Neverland, with the common theme being positivity and belief.

Singer Paloma Faith also makes a guest appearance as Tinker Bell.

The two hour drama is produced by Headline Pictures with a script by BAFTA winner Adrian Hodges, and directed by Diarmuid Lawrence.

First look at young star of The BFG

Here's a first look at eleven year old British newcomer Ruby Barnhill from Knutsford who last year landed the lead role in Steven Spielberg's adaption of Roald Dahl's The BFG.

Ruby (represented by David Daly Associates), who was cast after a world-wide casting search, stars as young orphan Sophie, opposite Mark Rylance in the title role.

She can also be seen as Isobel in the fourth series of CBBC's 4 O'Clock Club.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, The BFG tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.

Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG (played by Mark Rylance) is actually quite gentle and charming, and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country.

Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, the Big Friendly Giant is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumbers and Frobscottle.

The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.

Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

Spielberg is bringing the film to the big screen with a screenplay by Melissa Mathison (E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial), based on the best-selling novel by Roald Dahl.

The BFG is due to open in cinemas on July 22nd 2016, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.
