A Monster Calls casting news

Open auditions were held back in May to find the boy to play the lead role in the Juan Antonio Bayona-directed adaptation of  Patrick Ness's award-winning children’s fantasy novel 'A Monster Calls',

Newcomer Lewis MacDougall (now represented by United Agents) has been cast in the role of Conor O’Malley, a 13 year old young boy who attempts to deal with bullying at the hands of his classmates and his mother’s terminal illness by escaping into a fantastical world through the guidance of a tree monster, who visits him nightly.

This is the second time talented Lewis,who attends acting classes at The Drama Studio in Edinburgh, has landed a role in a feature film. He will also be seen as Lost Boy Nibs in the up-coming Warner Brothers film Pan.

Lewis will star alongside Felicity Jones who plays his mother, Liam Neeson as the monster, and Sigourney Weaver as his “no-nonsense” grandmother, while Toby Kebell plays his estranged father from America.

A Monster Calls started shooting on September 5th. Filming is expected to last for about five months, with post-production and special effects expected to take about a year, and a release in 2016.

On It Academy are holding local auditions to find talented young actors to join their industry training workshops for TV and Film.

The workshops have proven highly successful and paved the way for our young clients to work on high profile productions such as Disney feature 'Alice through the Looking Glass' and 'A Casual Vacancy' a co production for HBO and BBC.

Over the years we have been lucky enough to discover and develop aspiring actors from all over the UK. We know that there is remarkable talent to be found outside of London and so we are bringing our workshops to DIDCOT, BRISTOL and CARDIFF.

These workshops are a unique opportunity to study TV and Film Technique with industry professionals.

The monthly workshops conclude with a one to one interview with a top agent and a recording at Spotlight!

Bristol - Tobacco Factory on 18th October between 11:30am - 19:30

World's End casting news

The casting search for male twins for leading roles in the new CBBC sci-fi drama series World's End went international, with American actors and models Carlos and Marco Esparza landing the roles of Noah and Luke.

Shooting on the series has been taking place in Manchester since May, at the newly opened Space Project, and filming is now underway on location at Bamburgh Castle and its nearby beaches in the North East.

Also starring in the new series are 18 year old newcomer Jade Johnson from Hertfordshire who plays Cat. Jade is a member of the girl group Cru Band.

18 year old Erin Armstrong (represented by BWH) as Mackenzie. Erin, from Glasgow plays Cassie in the BBC series Shetland, and was recently seen in the BBC Three musical drama Glasgow Girls.


Sophia Carr-Gomm (represented by Brown, Simcocks and Andrews), a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, plays Lexy. Sophia will be seen this summer playing Maxine in the new Inbetweeners movie.





19 year old Pearl Appleby (represented by On it Artists) a current student at RCS, plays Gaia.


21 year old Corinne Shane, a graduate of Motherwell College, plays Skink.



21 year old Sam Glen from Manchester (represented by Amber Personal Management) plays Slim.


Vahid Gold (represented by Independent Talent), from Nottinghamshire, who was also seen BBC Three's Glasgow Girls. stars as AJ.

The 36 x 15 minute episode series follows a group of teenagers from very different backgrounds who are brought to live in a remote castle where their parents apparently work for the military.

But as the series progresses, the teens begin to question what their parents are really doing there and attempt to unravel the mystery of their strange new home.

Described as fast-paced and full of fun, World’s End will see life and death decisions slam up against the everyday dilemmas faced by the kids in an explosive drama.

The series, from writers Diane Whitley and Danny Spring, and directed by Ian Bevitt and Tessa Hoffe, is an in-house CBBC production, and will air on CBBC in Spring 2015.

Cider With Rosie

14 year old newcomer Archie Cox from Cirencester has landed the lead role in the new BBC adaptation of Laurie Lee's classic memoir of the Cotswolds, Cider With Rosie.

The casting directors searched local Gloucestershire schools to find boys with authentic accents and spotted Archie, who they described as "an exciting new discovery", despite the fact that he has no previous acting experience.

Archie will star as Laurie know as 'Lol' in the story which chronicles his journey from boy to man, first love, loss and family upheaval. Lol’s boyhood escapades take place in a rural world as yet untouched by electricity and cars - a place suspended between history and modernity.

Fellow newcomer Ruby Ashbourne Serkis (represented by Lou Coulson), the 16 year old daughter of actors Andy Serkis and Lorraine Ashbourne, will play the author's cousin, the Rosie of the title.

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduate Emma Curtis (represented by Gordon and French) with play Marj.

Billy Howle (represented by Curtis Brown), currently starring in E4's Glue, takes on the role of Private James Harris.

They will star alongside Golden Globe winner and two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton as Annie Lee, Jessica Hynes plays Miss Crabby; June Whitfield plays Granny Wallon and Annette Crosbie plays Granny Trill.

The drama will be directed by Philippa Lowthorpe, and is adapted by Ben Vanstone.

Ed Rubin, Head of Film and Television, Origin Pictures, says: “We are thrilled to be bringing Laurie Lee's classic and much cherished memoir to the screen, with such a terrific cast of top British acting talent and exciting new discoveries. The combination of Ben's vibrant adaptation and Philippa's inimitable direction will make this new version of Cider With Rosie a real treat for BBC One next year.”

Cider With Rosie has begun filming on location in Gloucestershire and will air in 2015 on BBC One as part of its season of classic 20th century literature.

Young British actress to star alongside Sarah Jessica Parker

British rising star, 19 year old Rosie Day is to star in a new romcom feature film All Roads Lead to Rome directed by Swedish director Ella Lemhagen, and starring Sex in the City's Sarah Jessica Parker.

Rosie will play the rebellious teenage daughter of Maggie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Maggie, an uptight woman and her former Italian lover, Luca, go on a road trip across scenic Italy pursuing Maggie’s daughter, who is trying desperately to return to New York.

Rosie (represented by Troika) was one of Screen International Stars of Tomorrow 2013, she played the lead in acclaimed indie horror The Seasoning House, and will next be seen in Norwegian feature Heart of Lightness, and Paul Hyett's next horror Howl.

All Roads Lead to Rome is about to start filming in Rome.

New CBBC series Eve casting news

19 year old Poppy Lee Friar has landed the lead role in new CBBC sci-fi series Eve, announced last year, which has just completed filming in Glasgow.

Eve is a 13 episode science fiction series which follows the adventures of a robot living with a family in suburbia and trying to make sense of human life as a teenage girl.

Poppy (represented by Curtis Brown) plays Eve, a highly-sentient robot living with a family in modern-day suburban Britain. She will star alongside Jane Asher who plays Mary Douglas, described as “a maverick genius scientist”.

Poppy, was a pupil at Sylvia Young Theatre School, and previously starred as one of the ghostly sisters, Sophie in the CBBC series Dead Gorgeous, as well as playing Rosalie Selfridge in the first two series of Mr Selfridge on ITV.

Joining her in the cast is 16 year old  Oliver Woollford (represented by Curtis Brown) from Newark as Will. He attends The Television Workshop in Notthingham, and previously starred as Grant Leetham in Channel 4's Utopia.

Also in the young cast is 16 year newcomer Eubha Akilade from Glasgow,

CBBC executive producer Sue Nott said: “Eve’s attempts to discover the essence of being human will resonate with every child trying to find their place in the world. With its heady mix of adventure, mystery and sheer fun, Eve is an exciting addition to the CBBC drama slate.”

Eve was created by Tracy Beaker Returns writer Emma Reeves& David Chikwe and is produced by Argonon owned indie Leopard Drama for CBBC.

The Boy In The Dress

Newcomer Billy Kennedy from London has landed the lead role in the new BBC dramatisation of David Walliams' book The Boy In The Dress, which has just started filming in London.

Billy (represented by Esta Charkham Associates) previously played Toots in the National Theatre's production of Emil and the Detectives, and Weeping William in Horrid Henry:The Movie but this is his TV debut.

The Boy In The Dress tells the story of 12-year-old Dennis, an ordinary boy, who lives in an ordinary town – but he feels different. A chance view of a fashion magazine introduces him to a whole new world of colour and creativity, but can a boy wear a dress, and what will the Headmaster, his Dad, and his friends in the football team think if they find out?

Following on from the success of previous David Walliams books TV adaptations Gangsta Granny and the BAFTA-nominated Mr Stink, this BBC One one hour special of David Walliams’ first children’s book The Boy In The Dress will once again air this Christmas.

The stellar ensemble cast includes Jennifer Saunders, Tim McInnerny, Meera Syal, Steve Speirs,James Buckley from The Inbetweeners, and Felicity Montagu ,

David Walliams himself will also appear, and there will be an extra special cameo appearance from international supermodel Kate Moss.

 David Walliams said: “We have put together a dream cast for this the first of my children's books and for many still my best. It is a funny and poignant story about what it is to be different. I hope it will make everyone who sees it, young and old, stop and think.”

The Boy In The Dress is a co-venture between King Bert Productions and BBC In-house Comedy. It has been adapted by Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley alongside David Walliams, and the director is Matt Lipsey.

My Name Is Emily

Filming has wrapped on Irish drama My Name Is Emily, which stars Evanna Lynch in the title role of Emily, a 16-year-old girl who goes on a road trip across Ireland with a boy from her school to free her father from a psychiatric institution.

Evanna (represented by Cole Kitchenn in the UK), famous for her role as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films, said of the role: "After I read the script, it and Emily were all I could think about for weeks; it is so different to anything I've read and yet so real and dynamic, and it is an absolute privilege and a joy to have the opportunity to help bring My Name is Emily to life with Simon and his team. Simon is an incredible person and he is embracing challenges the like that no director has had to contend with before and it is awe-inspiring simply to be in the midst of that".

Newcomer George Webster (represented by Curtis Brown) plays her friend Arden. He said of his casting: “Not only is it an honour and a privilege to be part of the team that's helping Simon to realise his dream...but it's also incredibly exciting to be able to work with a script as good as this one, so early on in my career”. George will soon be seen in Channel 4's new drama series Babylon.

Described as a romance and road movie, the film is the debut feature from Simon Fitzmaurice, a father of five, who was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in 2008, shortly after his second short film, The Sound of People, screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Confined to a wheelchair and completely paralysed, Fitzmaurice can only communicate to his cast and crew using his eyes and iris recognition technology which transmits his thoughts via a computerised voice.

"Making this film is the realization of a serious amount of work and love from my wonderful producers," said Fitzmaurice in a statement. "We are surrounded by the most committed group of cast and crew it has been my pleasure to work with. For me, it has been worth every effort just to be here on set in the calm at the center of the hurricane."

My Name is Emily was filmed on location around Co. Wicklow and also stars Michael Smiley.

First look at Spaceship

19 year old Alexa Davies leads the cast in Spaceship, which has just started shooting in Farnborough and Guildford, Surrey.

Written and directed by Alex Taylor, Spaceship tells the story of a father's search for his daughter after an apparent alien abduction.

Alexa plays Lucidia, alongside Finish actor Antti Reini as Gabriel. Alexa (represented by BWH), one of Screenterrier's Faces to Watch 2014 will next be seen alongside Asa Butterfield in up coming feature X + Y, and has just completed filming on the first series of the Caitlin Moran family comedy series Raised By Wolves.

The film also stars Lara Peake (represented by Hamilton Hodell) as Tegan. Lara can currently be seen alongside George Mackay in Duane Hopkins feature Bypass.

They are joined by two newcomers,  20 year old Lucian Charles Collier (represented by Bananafish Management) from Leeds as Luke, and Tallulah Haddon from London.

 “The story has gripped us all in a collective dream of what it is to be different and to want our own personal world in which we can be who we want,” said Taylor.

 The film was developed through IFeatures, Creative England’s flagship low budge feature film initiative, which runs in partnership with the BFI Film Fund, BBC Films and Creative Skillset.

 “iFeatures is all about supporting talented emerging filmmakers and Alex’s work is genuinely unique amongst British filmmakers” said iFeatures executive producer Tristan Goligher.

An open casting was held in Guildford to find young actors for supporting roles in the film.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Two teenage British stars are set to join Eva Green in Tim Burton's new feature film Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, according to Variety.

Asa Butterfield is in negotiations to play the lead 17 year old Jacob, who sets off in a search for answers to the story of his eastern European grandfather, after the traumatic & mysterious death of his beloved grandfather. He finds himself transported to an island where he must help protect a group of orphans with special powers from creatures who are out to destroy them.

Asa (represented by Independent Talent) was recently nominated for Best Actor at the BFI film awards for his role as a maths prodigy in X + Y, and he has previously played the lead in Ender's Game, Hugo and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

18 year old Ella Purnell will join him as young girl named Emma who can control fire and who introduces him to Miss Peregrine and a group of peculiar children with special abilities, including super strength and invisibility. Ella (represented by Curtis Brown) previously starred as a young Keira Knightley in Never Let Me Go, the teen Maleficent, as well as roles in Intruders, and Kick Ass 2, and will soon be seen as Young Jane in David Yates' Tarzan and Channel 4 docudrama Cyber Bully alongside Maisie Williams.

Eva Green will play the title character, who acts as a guardian for the orphans.

The film, an adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ bestselling novel of the same name, is produced by 20th Century Fox,  and scheduled to start shooting in February 2015.

Sing Street

15 year old newcomer, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, leads the cast in Sing Street, the third music-themed feature film from director John Carney, who's previous films include Once and Begin Again.

Talented singer Ferdia, from Wicklow, who has his own band in reality, stars as 14 year old musician Cosmo.

Sing Street has been described as ‘a semi-autobiographical tale inspired by the filmmaker’s love of music’. Set in 1980s recession-ridden Dublin, it tells the story of a fourteen year old named Cosmo who finds life at home difficult. He decides to form a band with school mates, whom he writes songs and shoots videos with. When family trouble strikes, he runs away to London with his fifteen year old girlfriend who aspires to be a model.


20 year old Lucy Boynton (represented by United Agents), who previously starred in the BBC's Ballet Shoes and more recently Canal+'s The Borgias co-stars as Raphina, his girlfriend.


Sing Street also stars Aidan Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy as Cosmo's parents and Jack Reynor as his older brother.

Production has just wrapped in Dublin.

Check out the first teaser trailer for Pan, the new live-action Peter Pan feature directed by Joe Wright for Warner Bros.

 Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the action adventure follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

The film stars Australian newcomer Levi Miller as Peter, young British actor Lewis MacDougall, star of A Monster Calls, as Nibs,  and newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling.

They star alongside Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard; Garrett Hedlund as Hook; Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily; Adeel Akhtar as Smee; Amanda Seyfried as Mary, Jack Charles as The Chief/Tiger Lily’s father; Taejoo Na as Kwahu; Nonso Anozie as Bishop; Kathy Burke as Mother Barnabas; and Kurt Egyiawan as Murray.

The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm

Madeline Holliday stars alongside Harry Hill (making his acting debut as Professor Branestawm) in The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm , a family film coming to BBC One this Christmas.

She plays Connie, a science-mad schoolgirl who comes to the professor’s rescue when evil businessman Mr Bullimore (Ben Miller) and local councillor Harold Haggerstone (David Mitchell) unite to have Branestawm kicked out of the village for being a dangerous menace.

Madeline (represented by Mark Jermin Management, and a student at The Theatre Workshop in Brighton) is best known for playing Hank Zipzer's sister in the CBBC comedy written by Henry Winkler and has also appeared in Holby City.

The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm is a hour-long drama, adapted from Norman Hunter’s classic children’s books by actor and author Charlie Higson.

Professor Branestawm is the original mad professor, an absent-minded inventor who is oblivious to the chaos his hare-brained creations cause when they go wrong - which they always do. If it weren’t for the efforts of his long suffering housekeeper Mrs Flittersnoop (Vicki Pepperdine) and his dim but loyal best friend Colonel Dedshott (Simon Day), the professor would long ago have blown himself to smithereens.

Harry Hill says: "As a budding schoolboy scientist and inventor myself I loved the Professor Branestawm books as a kid, I was fascinated by Heath Robinson’s wonderful illustrations too. It’s a thrill for me to be playing the prof in Charlie Higson’s brilliant TV adaptation. Best Christmas present ever!”

First look at The Casual Vacancy

The first images have arrived from the highly-anticipated upcoming three-part adaptation of the JK Rowling novel The Casual Vacancy,



Newcomer Abigail Lawrie stars as the troubled Krystal Weedon.



14 year old Sonny Serkis, son of actors Andy Serkis and Lorraine Ashbourne plays Paul Price with Joe Hurst as his older brother Arf.



As previously revealed on Screenterrier, the other young cast members include Simona (Chontelle) Brown as Gaia Bawden, Ria Choony as Sukhvinder Jawanda, and Brian Vernel as Stuart "Fats" Wall.

The all star adult cast includes Michael Gambon and Julia McKenzie as Howard and Shirley Mollison, Keeley Hawes as Samantha Mollison, Michelle Austin as Kay Bawden, Lolita Chakrabati as Parminder Jawanda, Monica Dolan as Tess Wall, and Rufus Jones as Miles Mollison.

The Casual Vacancy centres on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind the pretty façade, however, is a town at war: rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.

The BBC One miniseries, in association with HBO, is being produced by Bronte Film and Television, the independent production company run by JK Rowling and Neil Blair, from a script by Sarah Phelps.

The Casual Vacancy is due to air in 2015 on BBC One in the UK and on HBO in the US.

Ten year old Ruby Barnhill from Knutsford has landed the lead role in Steven Spielberg's adaption of Roald Dahl's The BFG.

Ruby (represented by David Daly Associates) will play young orphan Sophie, opposite Mark Rylance in the title role. She will also be seen in the new series of CBBC's 4 O'Clock Club.

The character of Sophie was said to be inspired by Roald Dahl's own granddaughter and Steven Spielberg said of the casting: “After a lengthy search, I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvellous as we do. We have discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill"

Production is set to begin in early 2015 with a release date scheduled for July 2016.
